What
kind of portrait photographer am I?
I hope the portraits that you have seen here show you that I can
be very diverse in my style. All my photos use natural light without
flash... natural light is simply the best. Even though I have access
to a professional make-up person who can be with us on the day,
I must stress from the outset that this is not a make-over service.
It is very easy to cake someone in make -up, point a dozen lights
in their face, soft focus everything and hey presto!...the only
trouble being (apart from the money and time that this approach
takes) that if you are not careful you end up with pictures that
really don't look like you at all.
My aim is to give you pictures that you can look at and you say
'that is really me' but I also know how to make someone look their
best without completely changing them in order to do so.
What
kind of portraits?
As I said earlier, any kind that you want. There are a hundred reasons
to want a good photo of yourself or someone you love. They can be
entirely informal, black and white for people who really hate the
idea of having to keep still and pose, or they can be structured
a little. You can appear entirely as you are naturally or you can
be shot like a cover model...whatever you want. The idea is that
the day is fun and you end up with some priceless pictures that
you can keep forever. The majority of people I photograph want the
photos not just for themselves but for other people too...they make
great presents. They might be pictures of just yourself or they
might be group pictures - it is really whatever you want. It might
be a picture of the latest addition to the family or it might be
a picture of the Grandparents.
All the portraits are shot on a 6 x 7 camera, professional, medium
format. It produces stunning pictures though I should add that some
of the images on the portrait pages are 35mm.
"But
I'm no oil painting..."
I have to write this bit for all the people that feel awkward because
they think by saying they want some pictures taken that they are
saying they look fantastic. In the end of the day it doesn't matter
at all how you look but I do believe (and I thought this long before
I became a photographer) that absolutely everyone should have at
least one great photograph of themselves. I should also add that
often, the people that I photograph are not used to having their
pictures and may well feel awkward at first. That is absolutely
natural and I will work with you until you feel entirely relaxed.
As we start shooting I will be able also to show you polaroids so
you will get a very good idea of how you are looking. Once you see
how well they are coming out you will feel 100 times better - promise.
Where?
99% per cent of the time, the portraits are taken at your house.
It is a good idea if you can change your clothes at least once during
the shoot and being in your own home is so much easier for this.
Also you will feel much more comfortable in your own place. I am
very good at disguising where the picture has been taken so it doesn't
just end up as a picture of you in your front room unless it is
decided that that is what you want.
